Stumpy Risky by MattBozon Stumpy Risky by MattBozon
Before a character becomes a sprite, sometimes we'll do a rough sketch or color guide. This is one of the more presentable ones. If you step back from your computer, she should read pretty well on screen from across the room. At least that was the goal. By the way, I think I Frankensteined that hat from one of Robert DeJesus's drawings, so just giving credit where credit is due :)

Inkilng02's oc's Talking:

Emanuel the Sorcerer:
-What a nice drawing! Heh. Nega-Emanuel has to see this! Hey Nega! Come and see this!
Captain Nega-Emanuel: (enters the room)
-what do you want?! I was busy planning for... What the...? Who is this beautiful pirate lady, Emanuel?
Emanuel the Sorcerer:
-According to what I investigated, she is Risky Boots, a character from a game called Shantae.
Captain Nega-Emanuel:
-I've got to say, she's pretty.
Emanuel the Sorcerer:
- Ha! Forget it dude! You don't have a chance with her.
Captain Nega-Emanuel:
-Oh, Bummer.

Your right about the stepping back idea and even cooler seeing this lovely sprite of Risky, still applaud that awesome belt buckle and top skull combo. *nods*

Very good for such a small pic though to have such nice detail, only hope the Nintendo chaps wise up and make another Shantae game, bleh.

I feel so happy seeing an origional art peice done for Risky. I loved shantae, and Risky and her nutty tinkerbats were some of my favorite videogame villians. I'm explodeing in awe in the presence of your amazing, and the fact that you were behind one of my favorite GBC games ever! I want to draw Risky and...well everyone from that game now darn ya!

So, I assume you mean that this was made recently for the work-in-progress? Looks quite nice, but I notice that her earring is just floating in space. Intentional, maybe?

I've heard that the reverse can work quite well too. Making the sprite first and base the artwork on that... what's your opinion on that theory?

I've tried that too. In general I find that tiny drawings lead to better designs. Or large ones using a crayon. Or... like this one where I try to go for deliberate low detail and maximum readability. I think its different ways of getting the same job done. So, what works for you is probably best but I like both approaches. Also, I might do a drawing if someone else is going to make the sprite, just as a way to communicate.

Cute work, as always, Matt. I really like the new style of the Shantae characters. I'll always love the original style too, though.

Thanks. I only imagine the characters would look like this if they were smaller than say, 1/8 the height of the screen. In other context I'll probably stick to something closer to the original proportions.

Yah, I remember the problems Miyamoto-san had when he wanted to become Mario in a character that fits in a screen without looose to many details, luckly actual technology allows to do that in more complicated characters.

If you stick a quarter in her belly button, the skull will bite your finger.

Wow! Rough or Sprite, that's amazing! I wonder how this would look animated. Something like WarioLand Shake It, KOF 12 and Street Fighter 3 comes to mind, but that might take some serious dough and a ton a hard work. I'm just saying, I have no clue how much work goes into making games.

Risky Boots is the real deal, all right. A Disgaea-esque balancing act of properly utilized cliche and charm to reach a memorable character. I swear it moves when it squint.

How's the push for a WiiWare title going, by the way? Could this be a preview of something amazing on the way?
