Here's a Samus I've been noodling since Metroid Prime 3 came out. Last night I found the drawing, erased most of it, and slopped in a bunch of hacky repairs. Originally I'd hoped to make a clean illustration out of this, but recently found that its more effective for me to just rough it all in, communicate what's in my head, and move on. I do know the chozo suit pretty well, being a 2D Metroid nut, but didn't bother to make it exactly the same. Really, I just wanted to get an idea of the feisty blonde bombshell hiding in that suit, and get her blood boiling a bit, since I feel that she's lacking some personality lately. In the good old days of Super Metroid or NES, if she got out of the suit it was time for black bikinis, or sexy death. Now she just skips around with her whip and blue body suit. I want my "Ripley" inspired Samus back...Ripley taught us that when a job goes bad, strip down and open the airlock. And, scream at the monster... it helps.
A Bozon Samus? This is awesome! Your comments make me wonder if Samus ever was Ripley-inspired. Sure, she was an ass-kicking female, but she never really did assert her personality. She was just... always focused on her mission! I say she more has a seldom-seen informal side than a Ripley-inspired personality on the whole. Also, I see the Zero Suit as trying to get across the message that it's okay to be and look female. Uh, right, art. I especially like the fiery look, very characteristic. I see you took some creative liberty with the breastplate there, deviating from the Chozo head-ish design. She's a strong woman, for sure, to be able to hold up those massive shoulder pads! Maybe you should start your own "The Women of Video Games" series! I'd be on board for that.

I always figured that Samus was Ripley, since Metroid was an unlicensed Alien game. It came out in the heyday of those movies, and had a (gasp) female lead who got in her underwear at the end. Also, the planets of the aliens origins are almost the same (SR388 and LV426). Aliens being a parasitic life form...setting the bomb, escaping...all that. She's even got a "male" sounding name. Later we got the Metroids that change based on their environment...it all runs parallel. Also...Ridley? Like, the director of Aliens!
Wow, I like your version of her Power Suit. I wonder if Nintendo would like it too? I wouldn't know much about Samus myself. The first time I ever heard of her was in Super Smash Bros. on the N64, to which I thought she was just a male robot (I mean, there wasn't much of anything to go by as far as gender went.) Now, though, when I found out she was really a girl in a battle suit, I was rather interested in knowing more about her. What games would you recommend for someone who would want to learn more about her, history-wise?

Waste no time. Get a Wii, and download Super Metroid from Virtual Console. Do it now. Stop reading. Go man go! If you don't have a Wii, pick up Metroid Zero Mission GBA. You can get a used non-lit GBA for $20, just sit in the sunshine.
Ah! All very valid points and parallels. Isn't cultural influence something? It just gets to me when people mistakenly portray Samus as a pure blood-lusting ammo junkie, which I guess Ripley wasn't either. I suppose my comments above can be attributed to my sketchy memory of Ripley and Alien in general. I rather figured that Samus has been coming into her own, depending less on the Ripley archetype, in recent years, but a speculative loss of personality is also something to consider. I'd like to discuss further, but I think we've gone off topic long enough. Thanks for the response!
